The first Surah (chapter) in the Qur’an has the title, “The Cow.”
“Moses said unto his people, ‘Allah commands you that you sacrifice a cow’.”
That was a long, long time ago. And we’ve come so very far, haven’t we?
“Muslims around the world slaughter sheep, cows and goats, during the four-day holiday that began Friday, giving away much of the meat to the poor. The Muslim holiday commemorates the sacrifice by the Prophet Ibrahim, known to Christians and Jews as Abraham.”
So much wrong with this story. People in extreme poverty; low wages; food shortages; thousands of animals slaughtered because it makes people feel they’re making Allah feel better as they celebrate Life.
No one wants to see another person suffer (well, some want to see that) and no one wants an innocent animal to die (well, some do), and no one wants to believe that their God enjoys killing, death and blood (well, it seems, millions do).
But it’s hard to read this story without cheering for the cows who fight back.
Once again, Religion, Faith and the Holy Books lead the Faithful Herd in the Slaughter for The Sacred. . .and time marches on, while we learn nothing, absolutely nothing. . .
